Meadows Volunteers


Fancy helping us out on The Meadows? We’re building a team of volunteers, connecting local people with our restored community space. Our project aims to enhance the quality of the landscape for people and wildlife. By volunteering with us you can make a real difference to this community project, helping the meadow survive and hopefully thrive!

What kind of things will volunteers do?

  • Practical, hands-on tasks e.g.
    • Helping to cultivate the meadow, weeding.
    • Litter picking
    • Raking and smoothing paths
    • Pruning & coppicing
    • Fence maintenance
    • Building wildlife habitat boxes, bird, bat and bee houses
    • Maintaining the lawn
    • Tree planting
    • Caring for the newly planted trees
    • Building Willow structures and green woodworking.
  • Volunteering alongside others as part of a team
  • Monitoring and surveying flora and fauna
  • Advocating for meadows and their multiple benefits
  • Representing Wirksworth Town Council ‘on the ground’ to the public and passers-by

The skills you need

  • No prior experience needed, volunteers will be given appropriate training
  • A keen interest in environmental issues and learning about the countryside
  • The ability to undertake moderate physical activity
  • Willingness to follow health and safety guidance, including use of tools and personal protective equipment
  • A flexible approach and a willingness to give things a go
  • Friendly and helpful attitude
  • Comfortable to carry out tasks independently and as part of a team
  • A flexible approach to volunteering availability as tasks will be on various days/times
  • Ability to make your own way to and from the task site

Equipment

  • High-vis vests will be provided
  • Gloves will be provided if volunteers don’t have their own.
  • Sturdy boots are recommended and appropriate attire for working outdoors in all weathers.

Hiring the Hall

Main Hall

We have  two buildings with rooms to hire on an hourly basis, and the newly renovated Fanny Shaw’s Community Building (FSCB) which is operated on a key loan system.

Town Hall:- The Main Hall is large, suitable for a variety of uses – dance, exercise, large meeting space, wedding reception, family parties, musical events, etc, whilst other rooms – the Club Room, Ante Room, Council Chamber, are suited to smaller classes/groups. All rooms are available for hire during the day & evening during week days & weekends.

Memorial Hall:- the Hall & Kitchen are available to hire for meetings, parties, fayres, events and classes/groups, during the day & evening during week days and weekends.

Fanny Shaw’s:- Community building key available free of charge for use by groups such as: parents, schools, nurseries, scouts & not-for-profit groups holding events on the park.
