Precept 2025/26
Wirksworth Town Council has now unanimously agreed the precept for 2025/26. This is the amount of money residents will pay for Wirksworth Town Council services which is a part of the monies collected by Derbyshire Dales District Council.
After a careful review of our entire budget, we have decided to reduce some areas of discretionary spending to lessen the effect of the cost increases we are seeing across our entire range of activities.
Over the past decade, the Town Council has repeatedly stepped in to take over services and facilities which it has felt were vital to the community and for which the District and County Councils decided to cease support. These include services such as the Barmote Croft public toilets, and the provision of markets and of childrens’ recreational areas. The Town Council also supports many local groups and events providing both grant funding and concessionary hire of its buildings as well as other resources. The Town Council stepped in to ensure the continuation of the historic Well Dressings by providing administrative help and also to provide weekly support to the Skate Park. In 2022, the Town Council took over the provision of the Christmas Tree and lights after Wirksworth Rotary regrettably closed and the Council continues to provide the town Traders Christmas Lights.
A significant proportion of the Town Council’s fixed costs relate to the continued maintenance and upkeep of its buildings such as the Town and Memorial Halls. The council will undertake a review of these items during the present term of office. We continue our commitment to investing in works to protect The Meadows for future generations.
We are very mindful of the cost-of-living crisis and our decisions have balanced this consideration against the need to maintain vital services.
For the Town Council to support services within the Town, the precept will rise by 21p per week for a Band D house.
