Wirksworth Remembrance 2020
Wirksworth Remembrance 2020
Unfortunately, due to current regulations resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, Wirksworth Town Council has decided there will not be a Remembrance parade or service at the War Memorial adjacent to the Memorial Hall this year. Nor will Bolehill hold a wreath-laying ceremony at their memorial in Steeple Grange.
Instead wreath-laying by a small Civic party will occur as part of the service within St Mary’s church (if Covid19 regulations at that time allow). Residents are being asked not to gather in large groups for their own safety, instead they are encouraged to observe their own remembrance at home. It is hoped the church service will be live-streamed on St Mary’s website for those who wish to feel a part of the event and people can also observe the national two-minute silence.
Andy Pollock, the Town Mayor stated: “It is extremely disappointing that due to the pandemic we will not be able to hold the parade this year, however, we must think of the safety of the public during this time and adhere to Government guidance. I realise this is an important event for many in the town and it is important that we remember those who have lost their lives, but this year this should be by individual acts of remembrance rather than public gatherings. The British Legion will not be selling pin poppies this year, instead Wirksworth and Bolehill residents are encouraged to ‘Donate and download’ a poppy to display in their window, there is a version for children to colour in too.”
